Two Workshops on Discipleship Formation

Jesus said “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit and teaching them to observe all the things that I have commanded you.”  The word “disciple” is used 260 times in the New Testament and a proper understanding of its meaning is essential for God’s people if we are to live out our calling to live as His disciples; and in our ministry of making disciples of all nations.

Back in the early 1980s, the LCMS convened a “Great Commission Convocation” that focused on discipleship formation.  One of the keynote presentations was given by Dr. Walt Stuenkel. Walt had many good things to share with us in his seminal bible study on discipleship – foremost that day were these take-aways from the biblical text:

• a disciple is an active student of God’s Word and builds one’s life on the person and word of Jesus Christ; a disciple does more than just master the Word, a disciple is stamped and fashioned in the mold of Jesus Christ and is a living witness to Him
• the Great Commission lays the double obligation upon us:  the strengthening of present disciples in their already existing discipleship AND reaching out to those who are not yet disciples with the hope that they will become His disciples; therefore, the entire mission and ministry of a Christian congregation must be geared toward fostering discipleship and discipling

Each workshop is from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m.  The cost of attending a one-day workshop is $10.00 in order to cover the costs of lunch, and the various snacks, provided by the host congregation.
