Dear Disciples of Christ of the New Jersey District,
Over the last weeks we have heard of the devastating disaster that has struck parts of our country, from the overwhelming fires in the West, to the destructive storms of the South and Mid-West. In many cases we are talking about the total annihilation of property, homes, crops and lives. Our churches are working hard to aid, console and bring the comfort of Christ to the people of our sister LCMS Districts, and they need our help and compassion as our brothers and sisters in Christ. No doubt our prayers are needed, but can we also, as a District, who have had our share of disaster (remember Superstorm Sandy) put our faith into action?
One significant way in which we can bless our brothers and sisters in Christ is to set aside Sunday, October 25, 2020, as a day for us to respond with an offering that shows our faith active in love. I am reminded often of the word of our Lord, “in as much as you have done unto these you have done it unto me” (Matthew 25:40).
As a congregation you are being asked to prayerfully join with sister congregations of the New Jersey District in making this request known so that they might have the opportunity of being generous toward those who are experiencing significant financial need. For every dollar, up to a total of $5,000, the New Jersey District will match the generous gifts of His people toward this good endeavor.
Once the offering has been received from the members of your church, send it to the District Office, noted “Disaster Relief” and the District will take it from there. It is our intention to forward these gifts to the Disaster Response department of Synod.
May we who are united in Christ and touched by His passion, lovingly respond “as Christ has loved us.”
