Meeting for the 17th time in its history, the New Jersey District re-elected the Rev. Dr. Anthony Steinbronn to serve as President. Steinbronn, from Howell, New Jersey, was installed at the convention during a worship service held at Martin Luther Chapel in Pennsauken, NJ by Rev. Herbert Mueller, the First-Vice President of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.
Under the convention theme of “Equipping the Saints” (Ephesians 4:12-16), Steinbronn pressed ten important focuses for the New Jersey District moving forward, including: how to tackle the adaptive challenges all churches and professional church workers face; continuing to form mission leaders throughout the district; the formation of urban vicars for labor in New Jersey’s densely urban areas; and developing a process to interface with and minister to “at-risk” congregations so that they might experience a new chapter to their ministry.
Rev. Dr. Dean Nadasdy, President of the Minnesota South District of the LCMS, delivered a stirring address to the convention on its “Equipping the Saints” theme, imploring pastors of the importance of building ministry leaders within their churches to touch the lives of people throughout their communities with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. At the convention’s worship service, Nadasdy continued to impress this convention theme in his sermon.
Rev. Herbert Mueller, Jr., represented LCMS President Matthew Harrison, also built upon the convention theme through his presentation of a Synod mission video.
The convention also elected the following to serve as the district’s vice-presidents: Rev. Stephen Gewecke (First Vice-President), Rev. Deric Taylor (Second Vice-President), and Rev. Andrew Dinger (Third Vice-President).
Special thanks to the Rev. Anthony Iovine (St. Matthew's, New Milford) for serving as our news reporter during the district convention!
15-01: To Amend Convention Balloting - allowing the use of electronic and other methods of voting at District conventions. Adopted.
15-02: To Realign the Circuits of the New Jersey District - reconfiguring Circuits #2, #3, #4, and #6 to meet Synodical guidelines for aggregate communicant membership. The names of all District Circuits have been updated. Adopted.
15-03: To Process Board of Directors Voting by Email - amend the district’s bylaws to allow for virtual meetings. It received 56% of the vote; however, adoption required a two-thirds vote, thus the resolution failed.
15-04: To Investigate Means to Encourage and Assist Pastors to Remain in New Jersey upon Their Retirement. Adopted 61 votes in favor, 11 against.
15-05: To Perpetuate CHEF Funds in New Jersey - if the New Jersey District dissolves into a larger district, the resolution allowed for the Christian Heritage Endowment Fund to be available for churches only of the New Jersey District upon the district dissolving. It was learned during debate that CHEF bylaws already speak to this potentiality. The resolution failed.
15-06: To Increase Nominations for District President. Adopted 60 votes in favor, 10 against.
15-07: To Update District Bylaws from Convention Resolutions and to Bring Into Compliance with Synod Language - updating the New Jersey District bylaws to be in written compliance with changes brought about by the most recent LC-MS Convention and the resolutions before the convention of the New Jersey District. Adopted 67 votes in favor, 2 votes against.
Omnibus Resolution A: Sending an overture regarding the use of resources from the sale of closed New Jersey District churches for Word and Sacrament ministry to the Board of Directors for further study. Adopted.
