MATCHING GRANT INITIATIVES OF THE CHRISTIAN HERITAGE ENDOWMENT FUND
At the CHEF meeting on May 10, 1999, the trustees approved the following expansion of categories of matching grants with which they wish to challenge congregations.
The CHEF trustees proposed the following:
1. SEED GRANTS FOR NEW CONGREGATIONS BEGUN BY CONGREGATIONS - Congregations may apply for a grant to assist with a new congregation start. The NJD Congregation Outreach Council must first approve the new congregation start. CHEF will consider up to a three-year continuing grant for this purpose.
2. MATCHING GRANTS FOR CONGREGATIONS ENGAGING IN NEW MINISTRIES - When a congregation undertakes a new ministry that will reach out to its community, CHEF will consider up to a three-year renewable grant for this purpose.
3. NEW OUTREACH MISSION AND MINISTRY GRANTS - Funds will be provided for new ministry endeavors either in total or in matching funds, based upon the merits of the grant request
4. TRAINING AND LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT MATCHING GRANTS - A grant of up to $1,000 will be given for called workers and/or lay leaders to be trained at workshops or seminars.
5. CHURCH WORKER SABBATICAL MATCHING GRANTS - CHEF will offer matching grants of up to $1,000 to the congregation that grants a called worker a sabbatical according to the guidelines approved by the New Jersey District.
6. MATCHING GRANTS FOR TECHNOLOGY - Congregations may submit application to assist with using technology for their mission. Examples might be assisting parochial schools with Internet access or distance learning technology. CHEF is looking for matching funds from the congregation.
7. MATCHING GRANTS TO ASSIST MAKING MINISTRY ACCESSIBLE TO PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES - While congregations are not mandated to make buildings barrier free until some other building modifications are planned, smaller projects such as an infrared system to amplify the service for the hearing impaired would make ministry available to the disabled. This grant would foster such projects.
Deadlines for submission of applications will normally be January 15 and August 15.
Appropriate application forms and more detailed guidelines for each grant category will be prepared as necessary.
Grant review and approval will happen at the March and September CHEF meetings.
